After a short while, he again heard footsteps, at first a faint sound and slowly getting louder. The footsteps came from the direction of the altar, passed him, and stopped behind him, rather near. “Hello, child,” he heard a male voice say, “I don’t think I’ve seen you before in our church. What brings you here?” Billy recognized the person speaking as the preacher. This meant that he would not be able to leave his hiding place without a lecture and that Joel would not come seeking him anytime soon. He was trapped in his hiding place.
